With a sound that resembles Dwight Yoakam if he grew up in New York City, the Dark Horses waste little time creating a homey, wholesome sound on this disc’s title track. Lead singer and songwriter Sam Park, along with drummer J. Hughes and bassist Philip Cohen, mine a vein that falls somewhere between Wilco and Townes Van Zandt. Produced by Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Come Along also has a distinct Steve Earle thread running through numbers such as “Over The Line”.
The prettiest track here is the twang ballad “West Side Blues”, a tune that seems ripe for Lucinda Williams to cover. The album has a few soft spots, particularly “Better Than Nothing”, a standard walk through Merle Haggard or Willie Nelson balladry. Elsewhere, the Dark Horses tackle gospel fare such as “Where Will You Live?” without sounding out of their league.
