Heather Morgan – Six Strings & Slow Backroads
Good young singers are a dime a dozen. The ones who create careers they are proud of, artistically, have something to say. On her debut disc, Heather Morgan delivers simple, direct songs in a voice that’s somewhere between Dolly Parton and a country Jewel, without losing its own distinctiveness.
Six Strings & Slow Backroads includes three particularly pretty songs: “Night By The River”, about conflicting human urges; “I Like You”, about friendship turning to love; and the yearning “Amazing”, recorded in one take with producer Scott Melott (formerly of the Groobees) on piano.
Morgan, 22, wrote ten of the eleven songs and brings a haunting, blues-based quality to The Band’s often-recorded “The Weight”. Her strong country-folk debut raises the question of how she’ll deal with ensuing commercial temptations, and if she’ll choose to walk that slow backroad.
