Jimmy Peterson, leader of this Minneapolis quintet, has stylishness and a sophisticated charm reminiscent of Joe Henry, a casual way of expressing lust and regret cast against a backdrop of urban roots. His songs are jazzy musings all about the groove while his lyrics are images squeezed between beats, subtle descriptions floating in space before tasty and unexpectedly rough guitar solos break the mood. Peterson, previously of Bellwether, is joined by Johnny Crist (Dashboard Saviors) and Bobby McCreedy (Volebeats). His lengthy compositions only hint at country; songs such as A Real Realizer and Write It On The Back Of My Hand meander in distinctive directions, paths open to intriguing possibilities not subservient to any specific genre. No Anecdote is an agreeable anomaly, a different sound with a familiar, reassuring feel, a new apartment that feels like home.
