The artists bio references the verdant valleys of Virginias piedmont region, which is a bit of a stretch: Clifton, Virginia, is close enough to commute to Washington, D.C. But Randy Thompson easily manages to live up to the alt-country cred with gritty vocals and rollicking roadhouse rock. Further On, his third album, showcases strong songwriting and spirited playing by an inspired band. Thats Randys son Colin adding dirty, vibrant runs on slide guitar; Rickie Simpkins (Tony Rice, Randy Scruggs) adds bluegrass overtones with his fiddle and mandolin; and Steel Guitar Hall of Famer Don Helms joins in on Rock Salt & Nails and the title cut, delivering familiar twang on his Ol Red steel guitar (the same one he played as one of Hank Williams Drifting Cowboys). The veterans create an energetic sound, particularly on the greasy mountain jam Goin Down To Lynchburg Town and the Tom Russell-ish Molly And Tenbrooks.
