As its title suggests, Tom Brosseaus latest takes what seems like a cavalier attitude toward narrative and musical density. Yet Cavalier contains plenty of the North Dakota natives weightless parlor-room blues guitar, and hes funny. Committed To Memory contains the lines, Ive got the time we went to Portland / Ive got the time we saw Reverend Horton. Brosseau has mastered a style of casual detachment that can conceal his considerable art, and he has an eye for what might be termed middle-class picaresque. You and your friends left Princeton for the beach / Without a penny to your name, he sings on Armory. At the same time, hes a blues musician. Brass Ring Blues bears comparison with the work of John Hurt, and Instructions To Meet The Devil could be set in the Mississippi Delta or the Great Plains. Cavalier is a set of beautifully judged performances that illustrate the virtues of the light touch.
