The fifth album by Austin quintet the Weary Boys is rough-and-tumble country with a rock n roll heart. Its as suffused with the loopy and confident vigor of high octane spirits and boozy antics. While the actual subject of drinking shows up in a number of songs on Jumpin Jolie lazily hopeful imbibing in Drink On It and escapist whiskey in California Sunset its the loose grooves and camaraderie that honor the noble purpose of social brews. Primary writer Mario Matteoli crafts lyrics empowered by resonant small details, bringing characters to life. The only misstep is a cover of Hanks Jambalaya; no doubt a raucous hoot live, its merely pedestrian in the studio. Conversely, their performance of Vaya Con Dios, with its laid-back pulse, oozes fully committed longing.
