CD Review – Underhill Rose “Something Real”
Underhill Rose cast a decidedly feminine presence on the Americana scene, which is largely male-oriented. This trio of lovely young women could have sold out to Nashville from their good looks and pretty voices alone, but thankfully they decided to opt for a vintage country sound. More specifically, Underhill Rose is rooted in bluegrass, folk, and blues, linking them with indelible pop hooks and soulful harmonizing.
On their latest effort, Something Real, Underhill Rose continue the sharp storytelling and lovely singing that made their 2011 self-titled debut sparkle. “Let Her Go” mesmerizes with its mood-spinning guitars and gorgeous singing; it is hauntingly beautiful. On “Unused to You,” the ladies convey their bluesy side and they do so with a plaintive sweetness that makes the sorrow go down easy. Probably the best track is “Drives Me to Drinking,” which plumbs the depths of romantic disenchantment that is part Patsy Cline melancholia, part Bonnie Raitt swagger. “He thinks he knows what a woman wants” is one of the confessions in this tale of broken hearts.
Even when the girls reach their emotional lows, their voices always soar. Prepare to be uplifted even while you are falling down with them.
