How to Keep It Fresh

Hey Ted - This seems to be one  of your favorite passions, traditional vs any other kind of bluegrass. It is said here that some folk say Earl Scruggs broke up with Lester Flatt to play in his son's rock band. I saw the Earl Scruggs Revue in the 70's. They were not a rock band. They played a more pop type of bluegrass mixed with some traditional bluegrass. Definitely heard some Scruggs picking mixed with some more modern type of banjo, I  thought Earl wanted to do something different. They were definitely a hot band and it was great to see Earl Scruggs play.

A band definitely must be playing what they want to do, not something just to please fans. I really appreciate that you provide your videos with your articles, they  really add so much. Not familiar with the first group you mentioned, The Bluegrass cardinals or  David Parmley and the Cardinal Tradition. Seldom Scene I have heard of and really like their sound, They play some great music  no matter what you want to call it. They are tight and you can tell they are having a blast.

Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead started out playing bluegrass and then switched to a multifaceted  electric rock group. Jerry played banjo in the recording "Old and In The Way", Another  set is being released ,where he just plays guitar, an earlier tape. You can still hear bluegrass style in his guitar playing.

 The Earl Scruggs Review

Pardon me for namedropping, but John Hartford told me Earl formed the Revue because he really wanted to play music with his sons. A family band. I've always thought what could be more traditional than that? BTW, Hartford was a friend and devotee of Scruggs.
