Music and Stories: A Reading List for Black History Month

How about Ismael Reed's "Mumbo Jumbo"? It's been so long since I read it in the 70s that I don't remember it very well at all but I do remember being impressed enough to read more of his novels. In checking it out online, music appears to be central to the work and Reed is himself a jazz pianist and his lyrics and texts have been set to music by an impressive list of artists. Kip Hanrahan released in 1985 "Conjure--Music for the Texts of Ishmael Reed"
