Tony Poole (Starry Eyed and Laughing) on the Byrds and More

Gary Stoller...

That picture you have with your story is not Starry Eyed and Laughing. It's the classic progressive band Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill. Even Robert Fripp has played with them and they are still performing and recording today. They are not in any way a band that is like The Byrds or any of the artists you mention. I believe it's an honest mistake, but delete that picture it has no relation to your fine story and find another. Wherever you got it, they credited the image incorrectly. Believe me. I've known Van der Graaf for decades and I know that picture. That's the original 1969 lineup.

Thanks for your eagle eyes. The original photo an editor posted was apparently incorrectly labeled as Starry Eyed and Laughing. We have posted a new picture -- take a new look. And thanks for enjoying the story.

Gary

Fascinating article/interview...really enjoyed this piece Gary.

Thank you, Gary, for the chance to meet such a thoughtful survivor of the golden age of the music business. He's also quite the encyclopedia regarding The Byrds. With only so many brass rings to go around, Mr. Poole has found a path that still allows him to access the magic that brings us all into this funhouse in the first place.

Stumbled on this by accident - currently listening to the newly released covers and outtakes record "To Try For The Sun".  Great band , but probably just at the wrong time.  Good piece.
