"Trouble No More" Documents – and More – Dylan's Gospel Tour

Beautifully written, Ms. Daniel. Your words fill me with anticipation to see the film. Love the gospel period so much. It would be so great to see it on a big screen, but I doubt it is getting that sort of release? I suppose I will need to settle for the DVD. Still, can't wait. Can't Wait. Which reminds me, Bob never stopped really with the gospel period. I think he just buried it deeper in his heart and songs.

Shalom & Erev tov...

This proselytising filmed screed -- which is part of the Deluxe Apostasy Edition, and  is 59 minutes in length, 20 minutes of the film consisting of 'sermons' written by Luc Sante, performed by Michael Shannon. These 'sermons' are stultifying in their effort to trivialise the Sho'ah (which natz'rut financed, organised, and perpetrated 1933-1945) by not one time mentioning it. The other, unspoken facet is that the bitter, vituperative 'sermons' which came from the 1979-1980 stages (one need only listen to Tempe, Arizona, 26 November 1979), some of them attacks against the LGBT communities, are abandoned for the Deluxe Apostasy Edition. One need not ask the Special Rider accountants for explanations. I find Ms Daniel's efforts to side step the fact that apostasy is betrayal, and 72 years after Auschwitz, there is no excuse 'Bob Dylan' can offer...has he so quickly forgotten his repentance with The Rebbe?

Pass. When I want a wacked out preacher I pick up my copy of Wise Blood and read what Hazel Motes has to say.

Dylan, Tempe 1979

"Well, let me tell you, that the devil owns this world.devil He’s called the God of this world. Now we’re living in America. I like America just as much as everybody else does. I love America, I gotta say that. But America will be judged. You know, God comes against a country in three ways. First way he comes against them, he come against them in their economy. Did you know that? He messes with their economy the first time. You can check it cool all the way back to Babylon, and Persia and Egypt. Many of you here are college students aren’t you? Many of you are college students. You ask your teachers about this now. You see, I …uh .. I know they’re gonna verify what I say. Every time God comes against a nation, first of all he comes against their economy. angry If that doesn’t work, he comes against their ecology. angry It ain’t nothing new that’s happening. He did it with Egypt. He did it with Persia. He did it with Babylon. He did it with the whole Middle East. It’s desert now. It used to be flourishing gardens. All right. If that don’t work, if that don’t work, he just brings up another nation against them. So one of those three things has got to work. Now. Jesus Christ is that solid rock.heart He’s supposed to come two times. He came once already. yesSee, that’s the thing, he’s been here already. Now, he’s coming back again. yesyesYou gotta be prepared for this. Because, no matter what you read in the newspapers, surprise that’s all deceit."

Well said, as usual, Anne Margaret. I wonder if Bob still considers himself a "Christian,'' or what that even means when it comes to an artist who has always been awash in self-contradictions, and challenges to the rest of us.  I find the gospel stuff no less self-righteous - or eloquent - as the rest of his work, and "Every Grain of Sand'' justifies it, if "justification'' is necessary or called for. Sounds worth seeing to catch Spooner Oldham, alone.  Again, thanks, AMD.

(One small request to Hilary and the other editors - if the typeface could be bumped up on the site, it would be appreciated. At the moment, it's a little like trying to read an eyechart..)
