Live Review

Twin Bill Barnstorms Into Cleveland

Alejandro Escovedo with Jesse Malin at Music Box Supper Club on November 20, 2016

Saw Alejandro on the 18th.  Went in with mixed emotions, was not a big fan of his last three records or of the Sensitive Boys lineup (very good musicians, just not my cup of tea). Was glad to see an entirely new backing band.  Great show!  The new guys each bring a lot to the table and to my ear the new record is his strongest in years.  Thought his earlier collaborations with Chuck Prophet seemed more interesting in concept than in reality, so wondered how the work worth Peter Buck and Scott McCauhey would work, which, it turns out, is very well. Catching him again in January.

Hadn't heard of Jesse Malin before, enjoyed his brief set.  He seemed to be trying a bit too hard with his between songs remarks, but he's a good songwriter and performer.  Derek Cruz was decked out in all black, including a simple black hat.  With his beard he looked Amish to me, so we dubbed Bar Life instead as Barn Life.  Good set.
