THE SWELL SEASON | 8:35 p.m. – 9:50 p.m.
Comprised of Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard (the Frames) and Czech pianist/vocalist Marketa Irglova, the Swell Season have been steadily gaining traction since their appearance in the 2007 film Once. In addition to the soundtrack to that film, their 2009 release Strict Joy has earned them praise from critics on both sides of the pond. LUCINDA WILLIAMS | 7:05 p.m. – 8:05 p.m.
Over the course of the past three decades, Lucinda Williams has become one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters in Americana music. Her latest album Little Honey landed in the first ever Best Americana Album category at the 2010 Grammy Awards – not her first honor from NARAS, as she’s earned 13 nominations in all and taken home three trophies. CAVE SINGERS | 5:50 p.m. – 6:35 p.m.
On the heels of their 2009 release Welcome Joy, Seattle-based trio Cave Singers have become one of the shiningest star bands of the burgeoning Northwest indie roots scene. Pitchfork called the effort “warm but patchy like a farmer’s tan,” which pretty much sums it up. ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO | 4:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Alejandro Escovedo has developed a terrifically loyal following amongst Americana fans. As a member of the Nuns and Rank & File, Buick MacKane, and other bands, eight solo studio albums and collaborations with Ryan Adams’ band Whiskeytown and other artists, Escovedo has earned his place among the most respected artists of his genre. CHUCK PROPHET | 3:40 p.m. – 4:25 p.m.
San Francisco-based singer-songwriter has whirled the American world around on its heels over the past year with the release of his latest album ¡Let Freedom Ring! It’s not the first time, though. In addition to his numerous recordings over the past two decades, Prophet has lent his skills to works by artists like Alejandro Escovedo, Chris Knight, Kelly Willis, Lucinda Williams, Warren Zevon, and numerous others. SERA CAHOONE | 2:35 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.
Sera Cahoone rose to prominence first as a drummer for the shoegazing indie rock collective Carissa’s Wierd, then holding down beats for Band of Horses (the offshoot band started by CW mainstay Ben Birdwell). But, since releasing her self-titled solo debut in 2005, Cahoone has held her own as an intuitive, thoughtful songwriter with an impressive backing band. She’ll join the ND Festival after having spent the winter opening for Son Volt and Jay Farrar with Benjamin Gibbard. (From the archives: Sera Cahoone – Give the drummer some more)
THE MALDIVES | 1:30 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.
Seattle-based mega-band the Maldives have become one of the most visible and prolific bands in Seattle’s ever-burgeoning alt-country scene. Their appearance during the No Depression Showcase at SXSW 2010 was a highlight of that night, and we’re happy to have them back for the summer festival. Pulling influence from every corner of the folk-roots spectrum, the Maldives also don’t shy from rocking as hard as a stage can handle.
