It seems Hazel Dickens – folk and bluegrass performer, activist, path-forger, extraordinaire – has passed away.
I got to see Hazel only once in person, at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco back in 2006. It stands out as one of my favorite live music experiences I’ve seen. Hazel was an incredible talent and a champion for women and workers everywhere. She was a friend and contemporary of Pete and Mike Seeger, and performed regularly with Mike’s wife Alice Gerard.
I don’t know any details about her passing yet, other than that she was 75. If anyone knows more, please add it to the comments.
RIP Hazel – a huge loss to the folk and bluegrass worlds, and to music in general.
