Guitarist Ben Sher delivers compelling, smoking Latin jazz on new album
Guitarist Ben Sher‘s infectious affection for Brazilian music soars to new heights on his latest effort, Tempestade. Sher’s effortless mastery of Latin jazz is a joyful treat to the ears; the warm, crystalline beauty of his playing brews melodies that one can sip from for hours. This is style and substance packaged together with tastefulness and exotic colors.
On the title track, Sher delivers a crisp, compelling performance that defines the smoking grooves of Latin jazz. There is a feeling of profound transcendence in the way Sher cuts loose on his guitar, glowing with feel-good vibes and youthful exuberance. The soaring, soulful sax of Donny McCaslin heightens its sense of exhilaration.
“Starry Eyes” is aptly titled, a dazzler with lively, robust drumming from Sylvia Cuenca. Its pumping organ recalls the late ’60s but overall the music is timeless and beautiful. Sher jams on his guitar with fiery passion; there is hot sweat in those rhythms. The simmering “On a Summer Day” opens like vintage Santana before propelling its own jumpy Latin beat and hypnotic guitar from Sher.
