Larry Keel Experience ~ “Train 45”

The “Mike & Mike” show on ESPN is known for all the bobbleheads that decorate the desk where the commentators sit. The bobblehead rotation has included a likeness of Larry Keel, a master of bluegrass guitar and recent guest of Second Story Garage.
He was in Colorado last month with The Larry Keel Experience, which includes his wife, Jenny, on bass and Will Lee on banjo. Lee is the son of Ricky Lee, the guitarist from the band led by the legendary Ralph Stanley. The Larry Keel Experience flew into Denver International Airport from Lexington, Va., and drove straight to the Garage. Then they got down to business and played “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” (not to be confused with the Spin Doctors’ ditty), “Memories” and the traditional “Train 45.” They also sat down to talk with Quentin.
Larry Keel twice has won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival guitar competition. He and Lee first found success together in bluegrass band Magraw Gap, which won the band competition at Telluride in 1995. Lately, The Larry Keel Experience has performed many dates with Yonder Mountain String Band, including a 17-show tour scheduled to start Oct. 23.
