From humble beginnings in the folk clubs of San Francisco, to hundreds of concerts across thousands of miles, Quiles & Cloud give voice to the landscape of modern America with the timeless blend of storytelling, vocal harmony and acoustic instrumentation.
“Recording folk singers around one microphone is common practice so I knew I had to add a few more instruments to fill out the sound and produce something a little different for their fans. Besides their regular up-right bass player Oscar Westesson I asked Dave Zirbel to play pedal and lap steel on two songs and drummer Danny Luehring to sit in on one song. I started with Maria Quiles and Rory Cloud singing and playing acoustic guitars together as they would live around one mic. Because I’m using a stereo mic it placed Rory to the left and Maria to the right in the stereo field. However, I asked Maria to move over to the center on the mic when she sang her leads lines, putting the lead vocal dead center. To balance the now empty right side I placed the pedal steel guitar amplifier behind Maria and off to the right side like one might do with a pan pot during mixing.” – John Cuniberti
