Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s Sinful Savage Tigers may be writing some of the catchiest American-inspired songs one can find anywhere right now. Their new album “Last Night of the Revels,” with its fitting lo-fi charm, spins out ten tracks of honest-to-goodness, quality song-crafting. Strings are plucked, harmonies swell, and the sing-a-long factor is often infectious.
With the opening track “Chocolate Cake,” band leader Seth Martin sets a tone and then proceeds to take the listener on a ride where landmarks such as ‘patchwork balloons’ and ‘two strips of leather’ are better navigation devices than road signs. Songs like “The Road to Mocharabuiee” and “Fastest on the Road” are sweet and romantic and ultimately likable.
Of course comparisons to early Avett Brothers material will be inevitable. And at one point Martin sings, “I’m so out of fashion, I must seem dashing.” Well, I think the proper response to all of this is probably yes and no.
