Let’s get down to brass tacks, the debut self-titled album from North Carolina’s Mount Moriah is good. The songs live in a space between introspection and the exultation of personal things one usually should not talk about in certain company. This is one of its more endearing qualities.
Tracks like “Only Way Out” and “Social Wedding Rings” swirl in a crisp, almost southern/almost folk place, never really committing to anything much like the characters in most of the songs. This can be a good thing until, after multiple listens, the listener seems to want some commitment. Deep, huh?
But I said the album is good and it is. Heather McEntire’s voice is sweet and sometimes vulnerable. These are the moments that resonate the most. Many of the songs (“Lament” in particular) could play at the end of an episode of your favorite prime time television drama. It’s good songwriting.
Mount Moriah play the Vic Theatre in Chicago November 8 and 9.
