Couch Jackets release Go To Bed

Couch Jackets came from Little Rock to Nashville to record their new release – Go To Bed, and it’s a dreamy collections of songs that stick together as much as they disperse for the progressive rock tag it gets, and that is something which should actually classify in the AOR-Prog sensibilities rather that the heavy progressive rock style known to music fans, which results in bands like Pink Floyd and Genesis to name a couple, one of which they fit a lot more into, being the latter of the two. But the principles are all the same when a concept leads the way to an outstanding group of songs that speak with their own voices.
“Sideways Chicken” starts off as if the disc will be more serious than playful, but the acoustic guitar gets all the credit here behind the lyrical message. The band consist of Ben Eslick (Vocals, Bass), Brennan Leeds (Vocals, Guitar), Hunter Law (Drums) and Harry Glaeser (Keys), and a chance to be heard as a unit, swiftly arrives on the next track “Pillos N Rillos” and the disc starts to take off to be what it truly is. This is vibrant, fresh and without static norms, as it combines an assortment of sounds to provide a solid backdrop for the heartfelt vocals. This happens before the sense of humor in the lyrics even win you over.
“Vicious Children” is another animal altogether and probably my pick for best track, if not for a following rivaling track or two. It’s a showcase example of what the record and the band present to their audience. A really well written, produced and arranged number. One of its rivals actually-happens to be the next track, “Don’t Think, Just Breathe” which is full of all kinds of odd signature time changes and keeps to an interesting topic about people who obsess with too much news watching. I love the way this track picks up toward the end and shows itself to be one of the more pleasing cuts on the disc.
Within their progressive leanings also come inflections of psychedelia and pop to a noticeable degree and it helps even out the variety of the tracks and makes them play so well together without boring the listener any. That’s where most of their chemistry shines through and the rest is a walk in the park with tracks like “Elephant Tusk(Helluva Musk” and “Kathy Was All Woman” to stir the pot even more. This leads into “Hit The Sack” which aligns with the overall album topic, at least in the title sense, but it serves to set up the next track more than anything.
“Tropical Jungle Book Hour” and “Oh Possum, My Opossum” take the tracks out in epic style with two pieces that bring everything the release has to offer to a close without leaving you abruptly cold or anything, in fact it does the opposite if you’re really listening and enjoying it as the set comes to an end. This is one release not to be missed on the world, and don’t forget to check out their videos too, because they really help you get where this band are coming from. If you really like their music, you won’t be disappointed in any sense of the word.
