Sarah Sharp Entices Again with “Sway” EP
A staple in the Austin, Texas Jazz community, Sarah Sharp is a singer that embodies the cool-jazz era of the 1940s and since leaving the acclaimed group, The Jitterbug Vipers, she has decided to delve into full breadth of her personal artistry by releasing a series of 4 EPs. As a member of the Jitterbug Vipers as well as solo artists Sharp, has consistently topped Austin music award polls as Best Female Vocalist, Best Producer, Best Songwriter, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Band of the Year, and Best Jazz Band. She has even been featured on NPR’s “Song Travels with Michael Feinstein” where Feinstein suggested some of her original songs were destined to become standards. Now, as Sharp releases her 3rd EP, Sway, she continues her story.
The EP begins with new and interesting takes on Jazz standard, “ Oh What A Beautiful” Morning.” This selection Showcases Sharps astounding ability as a jazz vocalist as she enters in and out of time through each section with such ease. Her phrasing in this tune and others fits perfectly in-between the guitar licks from Mitch Watkins creating wonderful musical conversation setting up a perfect foundation to lead into his solo. As the EP continues Sharp clearly displays her musical background as a not only a jazz musician with another standard, “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” but also as a southerner, with selections like “Always On My Mind,” that has been performed by countless country icons from Elvis Presley to Willie Nelson. She pays homage to these great artists with a very touching and intro entrapping rendition of this country classic featuring only bass and guitar to create a very warm texture. Sharp follows this song with a light hearted original, “Your Girlfriend Hates Me,” where she shows her lyrical aptitude. In this blue grass like tune Sharp tells the story of a conversation between herself and a man whose girlfriend believes that Sarah has been inserting herself into their relationship. Sharp explains that she has assured the girl that if she wanted her man she would already have him.
Sarah Sharp holds nothing back in this EP as she paints a clear picture of her musical identity from its inspiration to its realization. As Sway. Is only the 3rd installment of this 4 part series, there is no telling what we should expect to come next from this marvelous talent
