Up and coming alternative pop sensation Tim Atlas takes three key ingredients – stylish beats, effervescent grooves and a colorful vocal palate – and mashes them together in an opulent cocktail of sonic pageantry in his new single “Sidestep,” which is available everywhere that independent music is sold this coming October. You don’t have to be a hardcore audio aficionado to appreciate the textured beauty of “Sidestep” nor the stunningly talented vocalist that it showcases, and the haunting imprint it will leave on you after just one listen is impressive for any artist – let alone such a fresh face in the industry. Critics across the country haven’t been able to stop talking about this young man and the majestic voice that he brings to the table in what is arguably the breakout pop song of 2018.

“Sidestep” is a swaggering, confident electro-alternative jam that utilizes a dexterous swinging tempo to create a sense of urgency that dramatically increases the tension over the song’s three minutes of playing time. It’s the kind of track that could ignite the party atmosphere of a crowded nightclub just as easily as it could soundtrack an isolated evening of solitude, contemplation and introspection. Atlas didn’t just design a song to get people onto the dance floor; he crafted a soulful piece of music that doesn’t skimp on its lyrical depth in order to deliver a stellar collection of melodies. This is a quite focused pop tune, but I get the impression from the vivid production quality that its composer spared no labor nor expense in making sure everything about his masterpiece was refined to perfection.

Tim Atlas is a very dynamic songwriter, but I think that it’s his method of execution that acts as the real star of the show in “Sidestep.” The bones of the song are excellent, but it takes a certain type of charisma to make its words, synthesized harmonies and illicit percussion come to life before our very ears. Atlas possesses all of the traits of a true popstar, minus the self-absorbed, megalomaniacal attitude that often comes along with them. I’m desperately curious to see where he goes with this sound, which clearly isn’t done evolving but shows enough potential to warrant close monitoring from the music journalism community.

If this is the caliber of content that we can expect out of Tim Atlas in the years to come, then I think it is more than safe to say that he’s going to have a very long and successful recording career ahead of him. Pop music is in a very tumultuous, transitional period at the moment, and the vacancy that exists at the top of the hierarchy won’t remain unfilled for long. Atlas has the charm, the musical chops and the natural talent to make a play for the throne, and with a song like “Sidestep” to kick off his campaign, he’s certainly off to an excellent running start.
