RIP Charlie Louvin 1927-2011
News broke on Twitter this morning (courtesy of our friends over at TwangNation.com) that Charlie Louvin had passed away. I didn’t want to believe it right away, since nobody had yet published an obituary for the country legend, but I knew Charlie had long been suffering from pancreatic cancer. Now Nashville.com has something up and it seems the news is real.
Louvin, of course, rose to fame as one half of the Louvin Brothers. His harmonies with brother Ira were unmatchable, and his music has been covered by everyone from Emmylou to Jack White. He was 83 years old.
I’m not very good at eulogizing great artists, so instead I’ll just state the obvious: the music world is a little poorer without Charlie Louvin around anymore. If you’re thinking about how to remember Charlie today, here’s a great feature article from the archives: Charlie Louvin – Magic Songs of Life (by Peter Blackstock).
