Favorite Bluegrass, Streetgrass, Jamgrass of 2010!
So, I’ve written about folk and blues now it’s the last of the best of 2010 those bands and artist with some more twang! So here’s some progressive bluegrass, “streetgrass” and jamgrass but most of all good music! And I promise this is the last of the favorites for 2010! Now it’s on to new discoveries for 2011!
Trampled by Turtles – Palomino– the first time that I listed to this band the fiddle playing of Ryan Young is what stood out to me. I listened again the other night and same result! The rest of the band is damn good too!! If you hurry you can still get the MP3 download from Amazon for $5.00!! Here
.357 String Band – Lightning from the North – This band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin plays “streetgrass” and plays it well. I first listened to their album Ghost Town loved their sound and then went out and got Lightning from the North.
The Devil Makes Three – Do Right Wrong – this was a 2009 release but I discovered them this year and everytime I heard a track from the album I liked it more and more!!
The Brothers Comatose – Songs from the Stoop – A good time album from some guys who enjoy playing good time music!!
Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper – Flamekeeper – This album was the 2002 International Bluegrass Music Association Instrumental Album of the Year, and deservedly so. If you’ve never heard Michael play check him out he’s amazing!!
Cornmeal – Feet First – This album was released in 2006 but one listen and I was a fan, some great picking and singing and damn I missed them when they were in Jersey this summer!
Greensky Bluegrass – Live at Bells and Five Interstates were the two albums I listened to first as an introduction to this band and I loved both of them. All Access Vols 1 and 2 were released in 2010 and I just picked up All Access Vol 2 and it’s great but the band is a “Jamgrass” band so the songs are on the long siode but well worth the listen!! Oh and it was recorded at the Mexacali in Teaneck, NJ.
Now three favorites on the more conventional side:
Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen At Edwards Barn good music from a couple of guys who’ve been around forever and whose music is in my library in many places!!
Tim O’Brien – Chicken & Egg – ok so why I never got around to writing about this I don’t know but it’s a damn fine album that got a lot of listens this year!!
Cherryholmes – Cherryholmes II and III, and IV this is a great high energy family band – I loved II and III and thought on the first couple of listens that IV was not as good, but maybe I should go back and listen again!!!
Others listened to include Great American Taxi Reckless Habits, The Steeldrivers Reckless, Balsam Range……. and many more Check under Twang Tuesday!!
