Live reso sound revisisted…
I got ahold of some video from a wonderful studio concert put on by my friends David Elliott Johnson and Ron Norris in St. Augustine, FL. It was a special, intimate performance with a fantastic audience.
Checking out the videos now, I remember that I ran my resophonic guitar’s magnetic pickup straight into a Super Reverb. While not a big fan of the mag sound on the resophonic guitar (although a HUGE fan of Chris Whitley) for myself I like to have most of the sound come from a mic in order to pick up the natural sound of those magical instruments. Listening to this it is obviously a mag p/u sound but I am finding it far less problematic (to my ear) than I would have anticipated.
I recently performed with a reso/magnetic/deluxe reverb and had a little bit of overdrive added from Fulltone OCD pedal on it’s lowest drive setting. The result was more fun than a barrel of monkeys and I came away turned all upside down. So…as soon as time and gigs permit I suspect I’ll make a stab at playing with just the mag and an amp onstage.
HAVING SAID THAT…I’ve just been checking out David Jacobs-Strain’s vids and saw his reso ust being miked. There’s THAT sound…plus he has the Bob Brozman capability of moving the guitar around for different tones.
While this stuff drives me nuts, it is also part of what makes making music so much fun and so engaging!
I would love to hear any thoughts on the matter or any observations on this video from that evening…
The song is “Down the Road” from my album “Healing Bone”.
All the best,
