Blues great Lucky Peterson returns to the road playing songs from his latest You Can Always Turn Around (Dreyfuss). Lucky and his special guests will dig all through the blues – from the early days down in the Delta, to its modern-day step-children in popular music — on string of national tour dates starting on October 14 at New York’s famed Iridium Jazz Club. Lucky will play two shows at the Iridium that night, joined by a stellar group of musicians including Larry Campbell (2x Grammy Winner – Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, Phil Lesh) – acoustic guitar, mandolin, pedal steel, duolian resonator, Scott Petito (Fugs, Mercury Rev, James Taylor) – bass, shakers, octave mandolin, and Gary Burke (Joe Jackson band, Bob Dylan, Crowmatix) – drums.
The aforementioned artists recorded Lucky’s new album acoustically and live-in-the-studio in Woodstock, New York. Together, they dig in with fervor, and make a joyous sound that is both classic and modern – on an exquisite set of blues, roots and soul music by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Robert Johnson, Tom Waits, Rev. Gary Davis, Curtis Mayfield, Ray LaMontagne, and others.
The musicianship of these creative masters provide an ideal artistry that compliments Lucky’s vocal prowess as he tackles roots-blues standards, Civil Rights Era anthems, and such contemporary material as Lucinda Williams’ “Atonement” with its strong religious imagery, conjuring up images of a Pentecostal preacher. In what might be the album’s coda, Lucky’s poignant telecaster lead blends with Larry’s pedal steel on Curtis Mayfield’s “Think” from his classic instrumental Superfly.
Lucky is a man truly at the Crossroads. But most importantly, the album signals a turnaround for Peterson who had struggled with troubles that had affected his health, family life and professional life. But, as he’ll prove, you can always turn around. Peterson currently plays at his church on Sundays while he is not on the road.
