Caleb Klauder Releases New Roots Country Album TODAY!
The brand-new roots country album from master songwriter Caleb Klauder (of Foghorn Stringband) hits the road today! Entitled Western Country, this is Caleb’s second album tapping into his passion for old-timey country music and it’s already building buzz!
Check out the early praise for Western Country:
“Few voices in modern country carry the world-weary authenticity (think Hank Williams Sr., Charlie Monroe, Dwight Yoakam) that Klauder puts forward so effortlessly.” —Casey Jarman, Willamette Week
“There once was a time when country music was straight up hard. A time when bluegrass was simply country music played by Bill Monroe and Ira Louvin thought nothing of overlaying the electrified honkytonk of he and his brother’s band with his mandolin. That time has more or less passed on by, just no one seems to have told Caleb Klauder. If, by chance, you see him, don’t you dare spoil it for the rest of us.”
–Iaan Hughes, KBCS and The Real Mr. Heartache (blog)
“Western Country, taps into the good, solid sound of old honky tonk and early Nashville recordings. The sound is authentic and natural—Caleb doesn’t try to sound country: he simply is country to the core.”
–American Standard Time, blog for KEXP’s The Roadhouse

It’s easy to hear why people love Caleb Klauder’s music. With his dusty voice and Nashville-quality songwriting, not to mention his wide knowledge of early American roots music, Caleb can write and sing songs that sound like they could be rolling out of a honky-tonk during the Great Depression. With the help of some of Portland, Oregon’s best roots musicians, Western Country perfectly portrays Caleb’s new old-timey vision of country and honky-tonk music.
Portland may seem like an unlikely place for Caleb Klauder’s old-time country music, but Caleb’s extensive touring has allowed him to embrace the richness of American music. During the 1990s, Caleb first explored his songwriting in the acclaimed folk-rock band Calobo, a luminary in the Northwest’s burgeoning music scene. But it was with the widely celebrated Foghorn Stringband that Caleb was able to fully delve into his deep love for American roots music traditions. Over the past decade, Foghorn Stringband was signed to a major label (Nettwerk) and toured the globe. On and off the road, Caleb continued to write his own songs and dig further into his fascination with early country and honky-tonk music. First with his 2007 release, Dangerous Mes and Poisonous Yous, and now with Western Country, Caleb comes on like a young Hank Williams: singing familiar themes of heartbreak, revenge, love won and lost; all in the hard, simple spirit of true country music.
Touring frequently with Foghorn Stringband, Dirk Powell, and the Caleb Klauder Country Band, Caleb has made quite a name for himself throughout the US and abroad, and won many fans and admirers for his mandolin playing, songwriting and vocals. Caleb’s original song, “New Shoes,” (from his 2007 release) has been covered by the popular young folk ensemble Joy Kills Sorrow, and another composition, “This Old Song,” was recently released on Orcadian singer Kris Drever’s new album, produced by Tim O’Brien. In fact, Tim himself is an admirer of Caleb’s music:
“Caleb Klauder is one of my favorite mandolin players. He just stands straight and delivers true tone and time. There’s no pushing or trying to prove anything, but the groove lifts you every time. Caleb’s singing and song writing come from that same casually essential place. Call it “old time stream lined”. It’ll get you down the road. “
Western Country is a tall glass of about-damn-time for American roots music. Not only does Caleb include classic country songs, like Red Hayes’ “Satisfied Mind”, but he also loads the album with rock-solid original songs, like “Worn Out Shoes”, “Hole in My Heart”, and “My Time is Gonna Come.” As a songwriter, Caleb unleashes the true spirit of country music: ballads and barn-raisers about the love, hopes and plight of the everyman—real songs about real life.
