Bob Dylan’s Brazil Series
by Douglas Heselgrave
It’s easy to get cynical when a rock star tries to act or paint. There are so many examples of misguided attempts to cross over into another medium that they don’t even warrant a mention. I’m sure you have your own favourite disasters.
So, when Bob Dylan’s first Drawn Blank series of sketches came out in book form a decade or so ago, I thought it was nothing more than an attempt to extract the last few dollars from rabid completists. But, over the years more of his art has started appearing on the market and while some of it – it must be admitted – looks more like the work of a talented hobbyist, there’s something in the energy of the new Brazil series paintings that I find very appealing. His line and colour have taken on more weight, confidence and authority and the composition has improved considerably.
Here are a few samples from the Brazil series. I’ll offer a full review when I get a chance to see all of the paintings in the exhibit when they’re released in hardback book form next month.
