Please forgive my brief departure from the confines of the Americana genre parameters with this article but I am excited about this and wanted to share it with my many friends here on No Depression. Please read on with an open mind and feel free to chastise me in the comments section if you feel compelled to do so. As always, I welcome your feedback.
Joe King Carrasco has had a long and illustrious career spanning three decades. Joe King has been the toast of Texas as the crown regent of the “nuevo wavo” crowd since the early 1980’s. He played countless shows at Fitzgerald’s in the 70’s and 80’s. I remember watching him dive from the balcony and crowd surf back to the stage on an undulating sea of ecstatic fans. He rarely plays club gigs in the States after relocating to beautiful Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 2006 but Joe King Carrasco is scheduled to play a rare club gig at the Hideaway in Houston with his long time friend and popular Texas musician, Richard Cagle. I recently featured Richard Cagle and the Voodoo Choir in an article on my No Depression page. This should prove to be one of the most insanely enjoyable shows of the year for The Hideaway and the rest of Houston as well. Houston Favorite PJ Flowers opens the show with her brand of soulful Gulf Coast Texas Rock.

Some memorable highlights in the career of Joe King Carrasco:
1978 – JKC Releases the LP titled Tex-Mex Rock & Roll. Somehow the record makes its way to England and is re-released by Big Beat Records. After hearing it Elvis Costello was quoted saying “better than the Police”.
1980 – JKC releases the single, Party Weekend, and the label chase begins. Joe King becomes one of the first American artists signed to England’s legendary Stiff Records. Joe King was also featured in Rolling Stone Magazine and appeared on Saturday Night Live.
1995 – MCA Records releases a compilation of Joe’s music.
1996 – Joe King’s song Tell Me was recorded by The Texas Tornados and sung by Freddy Fender.
2009 – Joe King Carrasco assumes the role of writer and director releasing his debut film “Rancho No Tengo“. The story of a struggling West Texas drug dealer working hard to supply his girlfriend with the important things in life, like a hot tub, cell phone and her dream “Double Wide” as his world comes crashing down around him.
Joe King Carrasco’s music has been featured on major movie soundtracks including Tin Cup, Breathless and one of my all time favorite seventies TV shows The Rockford Files.
In my humble opinion, Joe King Carrasco is still the ultimate “Party Rocker”.
