Sam Baker, Natalia Zukerman and John Fullbright on Tour… Blues, Folk, Americana and Roots music listeners rejoice!

This is certain to be an amazing night of music, I recommend very highly that you get out to see these three musicians if they are coming to a city near you. I have had the pleasure of seeing them each individually and know that despite the varied sound and musical styling, they will compliment each other beautifully.

Sam Baker has an amazing story about his journey in songwriting, it involves a terrorist bomb that went off on a train in Peru, he was the only survivor of all the people sitting around him. Sam’s lyrics are sparse, poetic and absolutely stunning. I find myself gasping several times during his performance. John Fullbright hails from Okemah, OK… now, how many great song writers have been birthed out of Okemah? I can only think of one. Woody Guthrie. John Fulbright at the age of 21 writes like a road weary troubadour. It’s hard to believe the lyrical wisdom that comes out of such a young writer. A very talented musician who plays guitar, piano, accordion and banjo. I hope he plans to bring them all out during the course of the show.

Natalia Zukerman has a beautiful voice and the unique combination of perspective in her songs. Who would think that this city girl would have so much insight into the lives of people who live off the back roads of America? Natalia’s guitar playing is mesmerizing. The daughter of violinist/conductor Pinchas Zukerman and flutist/writer Eugenia Zukerman, Natalia grew up in Manhattan immersed in classical music. Her ears were tuned to perfect pitch, and the guitar dexterity, intricate sense of rhythm and meter evident in her own musicianship came naturally. So did the lifestyle of a traveling performer.

Ever the under-current, Texas songwriter Sam Baker’s amazing story and songs have slowly, but surely spun their way around the world. While traveling in Peru at age 32, Sam Baker took a train ride that would change his life. On a clear cool morning in Cuzco in the summer of 1986, Sam boarded a passenger train that was blown up minutes later by terrorists. Initially, seven died. The dead included a German boy and his parents who were sitting with Baker in the car. Baker survived, but with lasting damage- deafness, a mangled hand and leg, and brain damage affecting speech and memory. At 55, words are still occasionally unremembered, requiring extensive search. However, during these searches, he finds other words. From these other words, he finds other stories. And with these stories come characters from other places and times. Although just 21 years old, Okemah, Oklahoma native John Fullbright sings like he has been around for years. Firmly rooted in many American musical styles including folk, country, blues, bluegrass and jazz, John is just now beginning his musicial journey that is sure to delight listeners from coast to coast. Already he has the ringing endorsements of many great musicians including fellow Oklahomans Jimmy Webb, Kevin Welch, Tom Skinner and Jimmy LaFave. Other notable singer/songwriters such as Ray Bonneville, James McMurtry, Dan Narvarro, Steve Poltz, Darden Smith, Will Sexton and Michael Fracasso, all have been blown away by Fullbright. Equally skilled on guitar, harmonica, piano and accordion, though relatively new to being a solo artist, John has become the most talked about musician in Oklahoma, bringing the house down wherever he plays. His previous release, Live At The Blue Door, is a wonderful calling card for John Fullbright. The daughter of classical musicians Eugenia and Pinchas Zukerman, Natalia found her musical self when she took up slide guitar. Growing up in New York City, she found her kinship not in Classical, but in the earthiness and honesty of Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz and Blues music.
