1. Jamie Wilson, who made her name with the (Sidehill) Gougers before becoming a part of the Trishas, makes a strong case that she might be in best form as a solo artist with her debut EP Dirty Blonde Hair. The lead single “Little Too Rough” outlines the reasons why, as her strong voice, taut songwriting, and a few sonic chances make this record an undiscovered treasure. The song is a rundown of reasons why Wilson should not be attracted to the man she loves. Among them: She doesn’t need him, he’s been fooling around, she doesn’t find him particularly mysterious. Despite all of these, she can’t exactly deny her attraction, lamenting that she “can’t get close enough” in spite of all his seemingly obvious faults.
2. A jarring bridge proves to be exactly what this song needs — complete with slashing chords and Petty-esque background vocals, before a final verse finds Wilson’s lover’s departure leaving a “rock upon her chest”, which just might be this song in itself. Touching on the common feeling of love’s indescribable and often illogical pull, Wilson hits on all cylinders with this song, which has a foot planted in country and a foot planted in roots music without compromising a thing.
