SHEL SILVERSTEIN TRIBUTE ALBUM!

Sugar Hill records announced today that they’re going to be releasing a Shel Silverstein Tribute album, featuring My Morning Jacket, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Andrew Bird, and a bunch of other artists who are so great that they deserve to have their names listed, but quite frankly this list is getting a bit long for a blog post already.
As soon as I read that Nanci Griffith will be singing The Giving Tree, my eyes started to burn and twitch a little. No one can capture a sad story from a stoic angle like Nanci, and that fucking boy just took and took, and I swear to God if I ever find that guy, I’m going to chop him down, sell his testicles as fruit, make a boat out of his bones with a sail from his skin, and then go hunt and kill his progeny and do the same to them. Man, that kid pisses me off.
The only thing missing from the track list is Marie Laveau, which seems odd, considering Bobby Bare sang it, and he and his son produced this album. I would guess that means some asshole publisher owns the rights to it and is being greedy and self-centered—probably the same guy who chopped down the Giving Tree. Asshole.
You can listen to samples of the songs here. Black Francis doing “The Cover of The Rollingstone” sounds badass. The album’s out June 8th.
The guitar player’s drunken rants would seem more sincere if they had actually written the song.
