    The immediate inspiration for “Heart Is a Mirror” came from the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “We but mirror the world,” and his idea that to change the world, we must change ourselves. It was further informed by Martin Luther King Jr.’s belief that, for the creation of the beloved community, only light can drive out darkness, only love can drive out hate. “Heart Is a Mirror” also recognizes that “there’s never gonna be a way to make it easy,” an idea reflected musically by grit in the production and the dissonances in Rob Moose’s string arrangement. But the struggle is worth it — according to Gandhi it is “the divine mystery supreme” and “the source of our happiness.” — Ana Egge
