Afton Wolfe offered two songs from his upcoming album The Harvest, and a third from Twenty-Three, an EP released last February, during our No Depression Sessions at AmericanaFest 2023, shot at Jaan’s House in Nashville.
This No Depression Session, and the studio recordings found on The Harvest, display the veteran troubadour shining a light on his father-in-law L.H. Halliburton’s catalog. The record is a family affair, featuring vocal contributions from Wolfe’s wife, Robin.
The session’s first song, “Harvest,” highlights the message that good things actually can come to those who wait, delivered in Wolfe’s signature gravel. This song sparked the concept of the album, which comes out Nov. 10, says Wolfe. “This song was what inspired me originally to record some of L.H.’s songs,” he explains. “The song is about perseverance and patience — the realization that just because things haven’t been perfect early in life, there is still more life to live.”
The session rolls into a second song from The Harvest, the gospel-adjacent “Lost Prayers,” which features harmony vocals by Texas artist Courtney Santana on the record. Wolfe’s band shows up for this ND session in a big way, the whole lineup are killers. Watch multi-instrumentalist Seth Fox dance between flute and sax while the rhythm section of bassist Dan Seymour and drummer Madison George rock steady. Chad Stuible keeps the gospel vibes strong on both of his keyboards as well as his background vocals.
The session is rounded out with the song “Cry” from Twenty-Three, which channels a 1950s doo-wop feeling.
