Texas-born and South Carolina-raised singer-songwriter Jake Ybarra shared four songs from his debut album, Something in the Water, during his No Depression Session at AmericanaFest 2023, shot at Jaan’s House in Nashville.
This ND session features Dow Tomlin on bass and Billy Thomas on drums, the rhythm section heard on the album. The studio recording is fleshed out by multi-instrumentalist David Flint and Dane Bryant on keys. Ybarra shares that the tracking of the record “was a magical day”: I was utterly amazed that such performances could be conjured in a single 24-hour period. Even in the absence of Flint and Bryant in this ND session, the trio delivers the goods.
With a killer debut record and a ton of 2023 tour dates under his belt, Ybarra will soon settle down with a pen and a pad to give life to his second set of songs, and we’ll stand by optimistically for what he comes up with next.
