As you might have heard Kacey Musgraves sing in a cryptic commercial aired during Sunday night’s Grammy Awards broadcast, “My Saturn has returned” — and so, it was firmly announced today, has Musgraves, with a new album coming next month.
Deeper Well, surfacing on March 15 on Interscope/MCA Nashville, is Musgraves’ fifth studio album, and finds her reunited with longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk. She recorded the album in New York City’s Electric Lady Recording Studio, housed in a former apartment where Jimi Hendrix once lived in Greenwich Village.
“I didn’t know what kind of record I was going to make,” Musgraves says in press materials announcing the album, “other than the fact that it was going to be soft and organic and honest. My songwriting roots. And about less meaning more. But beyond that, this album is about who I am in love and what I’m looking for. The songs are very spiritual. I was seeking some different environmental energy for this project, and Electric Lady has the best mojo. Great ghosts.”
The first single from the album is its title track — a ghost of which was heard in her Grammy broadcast commercial. In the song, she’s taking stock, getting rid of people and habits that no longer work and getting back in touch with herself. Here’s the video, released today, directed by Hannah Lux Davis:
“Sometimes you reach a crossroads. Winds change direction. What you once felt drawn to doesn’t hold the same allure,” Musgraves explains. “You get blown off course but eventually find your footing and forage for new inspiration, new insight and deeper love somewhere else.”
Deeper Well marks a return to Musgraves’ more acoustic roots after 2021’s star-crossed, her post-divorce album with a more atmospheric sound exploring the depths of heartbreak (ND review). Last weekend she won a Grammy in the Best Country Duo/Group Performance category for her collaboration with Zach Bryan on his song, “I Remember Everything.” It was her seventh Grammy, a steady accumulation since she won Best Country Album for her 2013 major label debut, Same Trailer Different Park.
