Charlie Mars — Austin, TX at Threadgills; 10/28/09
We in Austin felt like we were the only ones with Charlie Mars in town.
That’s how we started out. And he asked for everyone to get closer, and so we did. Soon enough we were into Like a Bird, Like a Plane, and “taking it up another notch”, helping out with Meet Me at the Back Door – that one was so good we got to do it again a little later.
Clocking Out was exceptional, and took me back to the past in a lovely part of New York with a similar sounding group called the Sim Redmond Band. Both these bands play “all day music” for me.
Back in Austin the rain fell lightly while Charlie sang and played – along with Memphis-based members on the organ and bass, and J.J. Johnson from here in Austin on the drums –and we sang along , starting with Bay Springs Road from days gone by.
We were a happy lot, and ultimately finished it all out with our local favorite, Listen to the Darkside.
And kudos from all of us to KGSR for all the opportunities to learn that song.
Thanks, Charlie, for getting inside our heads.
