• Lucero’s “Live From Atlanta” to be released on August 12th (Album Preview)

    “We’re Lucero, we’re from Memphis, Tennessee” goes the all-too-familiar introduction from Ben Nichols, front man from the band who’ve no doubt spent more time over the past 10 years out on the road and away from Memphis than they have in it.  In a couple months, and after more than 15 years in this business, Lucero are set to release their first live album. 

    The band will be in its latest set-up, with Nichols on vocals, guitar and masterfully handling the lyrics for almost all of the songs.  The other mainstays are guitarist Brian Venable, John C. Stubblefield on bass, Roy Berry on drums, and Rick Steff on piano, organ and accordion.  Jim Spake and Scott Thompson make up the horn section that we’ve grown so accustomed to.  The only missing piece from their pinnacle set-up is Todd Beene’s pedal steel.  Beene has been working with Chuck Ragan as of late, and there’s no word yet from the band on whether they’ve moved on from pedal steel.
    The live album will be an epic 32-track marathon of songs that cover the full range of their library.  See track listing:

    There is no shortage of smart-phone videos of many of these songs from previous shows on youtube and if you’ve been to a show in the past year or so, the shape of this will be recognizable.  That is where the similarities end.  This is the top shelf, premium stuff.  Earlier in the week, the band released the first track from the album, Tears Don’t Matter Much.  The sound quality and mix is dialed-in perfectly, with the keys and the horns pulled forward at just the right weight against the original 4 pieces.  You’ve not heard live Lucero like this, even if you’ve seen Lucero live.

    “Live From Atlanta” will be a demonstration of where the band is at right now, with the horns played over old and new tunes.  If the glimpses we’ve heard so far are indicative of the whole, it will be sure to please.
