my second no depression blog: the road, thoreau, americana
so i’m in baltimore… where there is a small americana circle of bands… arboretum seems to be the break out band… and they’re good… i’ve heard them described as “chamber rock” which alludes to some sort of renaissance festival electric band, like the one on the free credit report commercials… but they sound more complicated and thoughtful than that description… personal and plusating… dave heumann plays a baritone guitar capo’d… interesting stuff…
i’ve been searching for a bit of inspiration as of late… read The Road by Cormac McCarthy… dark with a brighter light at the end… man… minimalism is his bag. reminds me of why raymond carver is so important; although he could be pretty dark, in carver’s last ten years, the sober years, he put out the most satisfying and hopeful work of his career. truly great stuff… also started re-reading Walden. it’s been a long long while… but both thoreau, and whitman for that matter, have a way of writing directly to the reader by breaking conventions and creating the sense that they’re right next to you… talking your ear off and helping you turn the pages of their books… cool… i wonder what thoreau would have thought of mccarthy. probably would have agreed on some principals and disagreed on others, i suppose.
anyhow…
