REM contest
The early 80’s were stifled with music from the ‘electronic’ era. Artists such as The Human League, Wham, Yazoo engulfed both sides of the Atlantic, all having their place in time but there was little music released that had ‘that’ edge to it. There was the odd gem such as The Jam and The Cure, but these were not fresh being established artists and having a wide fan base. The release of Murmur injected that zest into what had become a predictable delivery of music. It felt like walking on a tightrope when listening to it; full of energy but cautious about what is coming next. The jangly guitar rocking, the bass providing the foundation, the enigmatic drums and the ad-hock lyrical content of brilliance. For those who had been pleasured with listening to Chronic Town ep, Murmur was a natural progression and certainly not a disappointment! Nervously waiting for the next release, honestly wondering if something could be offered which instilled those feelings that Murmur brought. Those hip and daring tunes were listened to with baited breath, again providing a rush which filled me with cheer and disbelief that R.E.M. had, again provided. This slice of cake was more eagerly awaited and tasted good! “……I’m sorry, so sorry!” You have nothing to be sorry about. Steve X
