My Best of Nick Cave (& Co.)
So, in light of Ms. Ruehl getting me into discussing her Top Five of Johnny Cash, and a recent Nick Cave fire that was just set under my arse on here, I figured I would meld the two together (especially since the former knows little of the latter… an utter shock to me.)
It’s hard to pick just five… it’s hard to pick just ten, or even twenty. The man’s sick with dark, demented, lovely goodness. So, instead of picking the best five songs, I’ll pick the best five videos (tho, I must say, this will also be difficult as he’s made many videos and pretty much all of them are good.)
Note: youtube gave a lot of assistance in making my selection a bit easier, as a number of amazing videos is no longer available. Henry Lee, The Weeping Song, Do You Love Me, Stagger Lee, Into My Arms… all amazing, but not on anymore. Sigh.
Tho I can’t show you the five above, I guess in a way, I got to give my top ten.
I place these in no particular order other than what sprung to mind as I was posting this:
1. Babe, I’m on Fire
This video (from the Nocturama cd) is a whopping 17 minutes long! And the guys had a ball making every minute of it. It had to be broken into two parts for youtube:
2. Breathless
The came from the duel Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus. Pay special attention to the story of the animation while listening to the lyrics. An extension of the mad mix up of love and not so much love. Great video. (Plus, Nick dances so cute-like.)
3. Jack the Ripper
Nick Young with long hair! Need I say more? Actually, the songs really amazing too… and the video.
4. More News From No Where
This is from his new album, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! One thing I really love about this video is that it’s the hetero-erotic to Stagger Lee’s homo-erotic – dancing girls instead of dancing guys, Nick in a tight pink shirt… yeah. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a Stagger Lee video, as noted above. Crying shame, cuz it’s a great video!
5. Bring It On
From Nocturuma… what can be said of this video? What needs to be said. Priceless. That’s Chris Bailey of The Saints singing along with Nick.
