Last week at AmericanaFest, I found myself in multiple conversations revolving around faith: belief despite others’ surprise, not to mention faith rejection, spirituality, atheism, relief, and disgust. I was drawn to the contradictions in many of the conversations. People of particular faiths who write “secular” music, atheists who write about spiritual topics, and people looking for something greater than themselves, which they define as “music.” I was surprised by the common ground within these conversations, that music spoke to all of these people on a deep level, whereas those same people probably vastly disagree about politics and social issues. Like a piece of visual art to be interpreted by the viewer, songs often mean something to the listener that the writer may not — or could not — have intended.
People are funny like that.
This week’s podcast collection draws from songs that are related to the topic of faith — found or forgotten.
Do y’all have a podcast theme, recurring thread, or podcasting technical question you’d like me to cover in this section? Pop me a note via the Contact link, and I’ll do my best to serve it up soon. As always, if you know of a great roots music podcast, we would love to have them upload it to No Depression — all a podcaster has to do is join at the top right of the page (free!), read & agree to theFAQ & regulations, and post under “Podcasts.”
