Listen to New Track from Kentucky Wunderkind Madison Lewis
London, Kentucky songwriter Madison Lewis may only be 14 years old, but the young artist makes up in musical chops what she lacks in years. Lewis is preparing to release her debut album Back to the Blue, a collection of songs that pull together her varied influences, which include Tom Waits, John Prine, and Amy Winehouse. Lewis worked with producer Ken Holbrook on the project and recruited a team of accomplished players as her backing band.
Ahead of the album’s release, Lewis has shared a new song, “Unfamiliar Days.” The rootsy tune — which offers a lush acoustic backdrop for Lewis’ deep, velvety vocals — grapples with growing up and learning to deal with the unknown.
“I have extreme anxiety, though you wouldn’t know it to look at me on stage,” Lewis says of the track. “It’s why I started homeschooling a few years ago. I used to come home from school every day crying… just in tears. It was really hard for me. A lot of my songs came from that sadness. You know, that sadness I was carrying with me at that time.”
Back to the Blue is out September 22. Listen to “Unfamiliar Days” below.
