It wouldnt take the Perfect World Jon Byrd sings about with such wistful, regretful finesse on this disc for more people to know him as the terrifically accomplished, versatile country singer he is just one reasonably open to fresh names who are not brand new kids on the block. A veteran of the Atlanta and Nashville bar scenes, Byrd shows himself at home with hard honky-tonk, including a driving version of Blistered; less predictably, given that background, he sings all styles of country ballads, self-penned and otherwise, with depth and polish. The versatility shows with surprising edge-of-twang material from Doug Sahm, Neil Young, the Beatles (Dont Let Me Down) and longtime Allison Moorer co-writer Butch Primm.
