Rocky Votolato – The Brag & Cuss
The second Barsuk release from Seattles Rocky Votolato follows in-step with his 2005 disc Makers, an engaging small-scale slice of acoustic/roots-based rock n roll. There are echoes of a lot of other voices in Votolatos crooning Ryan Adams strains on Time Is A Debt, Rhett Miller lilt on Your Darkest Eyes, hints of his fellow Seattleite Gerald Collier on Lilly White which ultimately suggests that while Votolato has the Westerberg-school aching-vocal style down cold, his worth will inevitably be measured more by those he brings to mind than by anything fresh or enlightening he brings to the table. Still, theres a lot to like about his voice, and about his sense of melody and arrangement on songs such as The Wrong Side Of Reno and The Blue Rose. Votolato may not be an original, but hes a perfectly good next-generation artist working in the now well-established post-punk singer-songwriter tradition.
