The Spiders – Election Day (Single)
The Spiders’ “Election Day” offers an unbiased look at 2016’s arguably controversial and circus of a presidential election. It will certainly hit home for voters of both parties wo find themselves completely disenfranchised from the process, unhappy with either choice they have for the next United States president. What I think most listeners will appreciate is the aforementioned unbiasedness of the lyrics as The Spiders take warranted stabs at both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. While both are easy to joke they do a great job at highlighting each candidate’s flaws.
Let’s be real. Trump and Clinton can produce jokes about themselves just for existing, or more so opening their mouths. The “Election Day” lyric video, while low in imagination thanks to seemingly Google-imaged pictures for the video, opens up with the biggest criticisms of Clinton and Trump to date: “One’s a liar and one’s a fool,” following up with “You have no choice who you gonna choose. Press the lever and hope the best,” they honestly mark, alluding to the fact that this presidential election can literally be a coin toss for the best (or, rather, worst) choice. The video alludes to Trump’s call for building walls while taking Hillary on about her constant email lies.
Sonically, the song feels outdated. Perhaps it isn’t meant for mainstream listening which, as a matter of fact, is a shame considering the liberal media could use some criticism for protecting its not-so-perfect candidate in pant suits. Thankfully, the video uses the best (or, rather, worst) close ups of her sly, devilish, untrustworthy face.
“Hey, we got something to say…in the USA” screams the chorus. The Spiders is taking a stand for everybody who is put off by what is said to be the most important election of this lifetime. It can very well dictate future elections processes (the “outsider” versus a convention’s “chosen one”).
The best part of the song comes in its second verse, straying away from politicians and honing in on the human condition of the American citizen. It mentions working at minimum wage and employment at Starbucks till the age of 48. Yep, scary thought indeed. It talks depression and us all being on meds (because we need to be if even we should not). We work for scraps and at the end of it all we lost it to the taxman who “takes it away.” Kudos to The Spiders for standing up to the IRS as well.
Smartly, The Spiders mentions Rock N’ Roll, perhaps as a savior itself to the country’s problems. Rock has always been about sticking it to the man, and here is a modern day anthem for those who believe in its frankly universal message. One side will win this November and The Spiders knows we are screwed either way. For them, it isn’t even about who will screw us less. They are both seen as equals. What it ultimately comes down to is something “Election Day” picks up on: a fool’s words versus a liar’s trail of deception.
