The Mavericks – Brand New Day (Mono Mundo Recordings)
Jim Flammia at All Eyes Media tells us the genre defying Mavericks are declaring their independence and stepping out on their own with their new album Brand New Day, the first studio album released on Mono Mundo Recordings, the label they founded in 2016. Raul Malo band leader, lead singer and album co-producer said “This is the first studio record on our own label, and it is an important component in the band’s history, but the real goal was just to make a great record.”
So, with all this new independence, what is new? Well first of all the first cut on the album, “Rolling Along” is tejano bluegrass style. Now I absolutely could be wrong but I don’t remember a banjo, played by Scott Vestal, connected with The Mavericks music. I love it. Continuing in their genre breaking tradition “I Will Be Yours” takes me back to the early years of rock and roll. When it starts i hear Conway Twitty and further into the song there is a speaking word verse just like you might hear from Elvis or The Big Bopper. Fantastic. A lot of Mavericks music has always been about love, given, unrequited, and totally flat out rejected. Thank god that stays inherent with the new album. “Goodnight Waltz” starts with a beautiful laid back accordion from Michael Guerra. Raul Malo’s ever beautiful voice continues the ballad with horns filling in spaces. “Damned (If You Do) continues the story of relationship decisions. The horns and Eddie Perez’s guitar push the song forward. Wonderful. I have to mention the bottom of The Mavericks sound. Paul Deakin on drums keeps everything in place without being over the top while the ever eccentric Jerry Dale McFadden, new label or not is still the lovable Jerry Dale McFadden. Listening to the album I can absolutely picture him dancing.
The Mavericks on their newly owned label are still incredible.
