Cedar Teeth— Ode to Winter
Swear to God, I can tell the region of bands these days just by hearing a song or watching a video, if the region is the Pacific Northwest. I hadn’t really noticed it before though there had been a shared sound starting back in the early days of The Decemberists and carrying through bands like Alialujah Choir and the like. There is a mix of hick and Pop, a sense of rock hooked up with twang, a tendency toward vocal harmony. No perfect vocals. No perfect backup. But let’s face it. Perfect is yesterday.
Portland’s Cedar Teeth has the combination, if their latest video is any indication. Ethereal meets banjo with backing vocals straight out of a backwoods church. Not a combination which could rise to the clouds and yet it does. Put in simple terms, this almost makes me want to move to Portland. The song is from the band’s new release, Farewell to Green Mountain.
