Mattiel’s new single and video “Whites of Their Eyes” is poised and purposeful.
The music video for Mattiel’s “Whites of Their Eyes” is a pseudo Wes Anderson collage, so quintessentially the special type of Los Angeles cowboy aesthetic that Mattiel, born in rural Georgia, channels expertly. I almost wonder if she is singing about traffic, the whites of the eyes of drivings slugging along across ten lanes. In reality, the lyrics are about battle in the Revolutionary War. The vivid colors of the Mattiel’s immaculately created scenes and twangy, upbeat rhythms, contrast with the stark and blank hillsides of the Southern California desert and Georgian hills. She is still and passive for most of the video, her surroundings collide with her calm demeanor. Eggs smash into her face, a skeleton traces her cheek, and fireworks explode from her hands.
This song evokes the Americana that is poised, purposeful and 60’s rock and roll that Mattiel was inspired by in her childhood.
