Special one-one pressing of Larry and His Flask and Cobra Skulls split 7″

Independent punk label Asian Man Records is preparing to release a split 7” between two very different bands in America’s music underground. On A Side there is a song by American bluegrass punk outfit Larry and His Flask, Love for the Wicked, and on the B Side a song by Nevada-based punk trio Cobra Skulls, Relief. The former is a dirty, raucous and rhythmically driven composition with distorted riffs and twangy acoustic pickin’, and with gravelly vocals and a mixture of backing voices. And the latter, a punk and rockabilly fusion, with a punctuating drumbeat falling on the downstroke of the dominant chords, catchy riffs, and intense vocals.

Odd that I should review this split 7” now, being that I reviewed albums involving both of these bands in recent years. The first one was Tom VandenAvond’s “You Oughta Know Me By Now” from Hillgrass Bluebilly Records, which featured Larry and His Flask as his backing band. And then, in 2011, I did a little write-up on The Cobra Skulls’ “Agitations” album from Fat Wreck Chords. Obviously both were memorable albums. And I am glad that they are both still doing their thing.

My singular critique of the Larry and His Flask + Cobra Skulls split 7” is that it is over all too quickly and leaves the listener wanting more. Admittedly, this is the kind of release that makes me hungry for more. And hope we see more from both of these bands in the very near future.
